Globinssuch is a hypothetical class of globin-like proteins proposed in speculative discussions of protein evolution. The term refers to globin family members that would combine the typical globin fold with distinctive extensions around the heme pocket. The concept arose to explore how globin diversity might extend beyond the canonical six- to eight-helical fold and how new ligand- and redox chemistries could emerge.

Structure and properties: Globinssuch proteins are predicted to retain the core eight-helix globin framework but feature elongated C- and E-regions and an expanded distal pocket. This arrangement could allow binding of diatomic ligands with altered kinetics and could enable interactions with reactive sulfur species. The heme iron would be coordinated by the proximal histidine, as in other globins, with potential additional heme coordination sites in some variants.

Distribution and proposed functions: In hypothetical models, globinssuch proteins would be found in extremophile bacteria and archaea inhabiting hypoxic or chemically harsh environments, where rapid sensing of oxygen or detoxification of reactive species would be advantageous. Proposed functions include oxygen sensing and detoxification of nitric oxide or sulfide, as well as participation in redox signaling under stress.
