Gitarrförvridare, often translated as "guitar distortion" or "guitar overdrive," refers to electronic effects that alter the sound of an electric guitar by clipping its waveform. This clipping process introduces harmonics and sustains, creating a richer, more aggressive, and often louder tone compared to a clean guitar signal. Distortion effects can range from subtle warmth and grit to heavily saturated and fuzzy sounds.

The effect is typically achieved through analog circuits using vacuum tubes, transistors, or operational amplifiers. When a guitar's signal is too strong for the circuit's intended operating range, the peaks and troughs of the audio waveform are flattened or "clipped." This clipping can be hard, meaning the waveform is sharply cut off, or soft, where the clipping is more gradual. Different clipping methods result in distinct tonal characteristics.

Distortion is a fundamental element in many music genres, including rock, blues, metal, and punk. It is used to add emphasis to riffs, create powerful solos, and shape the overall sonic texture of a song. Guitarists often control the amount of distortion using a dedicated knob on their amplifier or through effects pedals.
