Ioannis Giomataris is best known for leading the development of Micromegas (Micro-Mesh Gaseous Structure) detectors, introduced in the 1990s as a type of micro-pattern gaseous detector. Micromegas devices combine a thin amplification gap, created by a micro-mesh electrode suspended above a readout plane, with a bulk gas volume. This configuration provides high gas gain, fine spatial resolution, and reliable operation at high particle flux, with relatively low discharge probability.
