Giardiet

Giardiet is a common intestinal parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Giardia duodenalis, also known as Giardia lamblia or Giardia intestinalis. This microscopic parasite infects the small intestine of humans and animals. Infection typically occurs through the ingestion of cysts, which are protective, dormant forms of the parasite, often found in contaminated water, food, or on surfaces. Poor hygiene practices can also contribute to the spread.

Symptoms of giardiet, also known as giardiasis, can vary widely. Some individuals may experience no symptoms at all, while others develop diarrhea, gas, greasy stools, stomach cramps, nausea, and dehydration. These symptoms usually appear one to two weeks after infection and can last for several weeks or longer if left untreated. Diagnosis is usually made through stool sample examination.

Giardiet is treatable with prescription antiparasitic medications. Prevention strategies focus on safe water and food handling, including thorough hand washing after using the toilet or changing diapers, and before preparing or eating food. Boiling or treating drinking water from potentially contaminated sources is also a key preventive measure. Animals, particularly beavers and muskrats, are common reservoirs for Giardia, and contact with their feces or contaminated water can lead to infection.
