Gianyar

Gianyar is a regency in Bali Province, Indonesia. It lies in the central part of the island, with a coastline along the Bali Sea to the south and inland highlands to the north. The regency’s administrative center is the town of Gianyar, and its area includes the well-known town of Ubud, a major cultural and tourism hub.

Administratively, Gianyar is divided into several districts (kecamatan), including Sukawati, Gianyar, Ubud, Tegallalang, Tampaksiring, Blahbatuh, and Payangan. The landscape ranges from terraced rice fields and forested hills to coastal plain areas. While agriculture remains important in many areas, tourism is the leading economic activity, supported by hospitality, crafts, and dining services.

Gianyar hosts numerous temples and archaeological sites. Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) near Bedulu, Gunung Kawi temple in Tampaksiring, and Tirta Empul temple near Manukaya are among the best-known sites. Tegallalang and other villages in the regency are famous for their rice terraces and traditional crafts, such as woodcarving and silverwork. The town of Ubud functions as Bali’s cultural center, with markets, galleries, and traditional dance performances.

Efforts in Gianyar focus on balancing tourism development with cultural preservation and environmental management. The regency is connected to Denpasar and other parts of Bali by road and bus services, and serves as a gateway for travelers exploring central Bali and the upland regions near Mount Batur.
