Gezags

Gezags is a Dutch noun that denotes authority, influence, or control exercised by individuals or institutions. In everyday language it can refer to the power to command, set rules, or maintain order. The plural form gezags is used when speaking of authorities as a collective or of multiple sources of power, such as government bodies, courts, or family figures.

The word derives from the singular gezag, which denotes the quality of being authoritative and the right or capacity to give orders. In Dutch, gezag is used in both secular and religious contexts and appears in idioms such as gezag uitoefenen (to exercise authority) and gezaghebbend (authoritative). The term can refer to formal authority (legal or institutional power) as well as informal influence based on respect or legitimacy.

In legal contexts, gezag has a defined role in areas such as family law, where ouderlijk gezag (parental authority) concerns the rights and responsibilities of parents toward their underage children.
