Gewächshauskühlung refers to the methods and technologies used to control and reduce the temperature inside a greenhouse. Greenhouses are designed to trap solar radiation, which can lead to significant overheating, especially during warmer months or in sunny climates. Effective cooling is essential for maintaining optimal growing conditions for plants, preventing heat stress, and ensuring healthy development.

Several techniques are employed for Gewächshauskühlung. Natural ventilation is a basic method that involves opening vents, windows, or doors to allow cooler outside air to enter and replace the warm, stale air. This is often supplemented by roof vents and side vents that create a chimney effect, facilitating air circulation.

For more precise temperature control, mechanical cooling systems are utilized. Evaporative cooling, also known as pad-and-fan cooling, is a common and energy-efficient method. Water is circulated through porous pads, typically made of cellulose or mineral wool, located at one end of the greenhouse. Fans at the opposite end draw air through the wet pads, causing the water to evaporate. This evaporation process absorbs heat from the air, significantly lowering the temperature inside.

Another mechanical approach involves air conditioning systems, similar to those used in buildings. These systems use refrigerants to actively remove heat from the air. While highly effective, air conditioning is generally more energy-intensive and costly to operate than evaporative cooling. Misting and fogging systems also contribute to cooling through evaporative effects, creating fine water droplets that evaporate and cool the air.

The choice of Gewächshauskühlung method depends on factors such as the greenhouse size, climate conditions, crop requirements, and budget. A combination of techniques might also be employed to achieve the desired temperature regulation.
