Gettingität

Gettingität is a term coined by author and researcher, Björn Gaede, in his 2009 paper "The idea of Gettingität: a study on the concept of laid-back identity." Gaede defines Gettingität as a cultural mode of being that prioritizes a relaxed and casual approach to life.

According to Gaede, Gettingität is characterized by a rejection of traditional norms and expectations of productivity and achievement. Individuals who embody Gettingität adopt an attitude of detachment, choosing to avoid stress and over-enthusiasm, instead opting for a more laid-back and spontaneous approach to daily life.

Gettingität has been observed in various subcultures, including the laid-back surfer and skater communities. These groups often value the freedom to enjoy the moment and avoid pressure to achieve specific goals or opinions. This attitude is not necessarily associated with laziness or a lack of motivation, but rather an acceptance of the present moment and a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.

Researchers have noted that Gettingität shares some similarities with other cultural and philosophical concepts, such as the concept of "wu wei" from Taoist philosophy, which advocates for aligning oneself with the natural flow of life. However, Gettingität is distinct in its emphasis on the cultural and social aspects of this attitude, rather than its spiritual or philosophical underpinnings.
