Geschwader

Geschwader is a unit of organization in German-speaking air forces, roughly equivalent to an air wing in English. It groups several squadrons (Staffeln) under a single command and provides operational control, maintenance, and logistics for its subordinate units. The basic combat subunit is the Staffel; several Staffeln form a Gruppe, and two to four Gruppen commonly comprise a Geschwader, though the exact size varies with era and country. The Geschwader is commanded by a Geschwaderkommandeur and supported by a Geschwaderstab (staff) and dedicated support elements.

Different types of Geschwader exist according to mission, such as Jagdgeschwader (fighter wings), Kampfgeschwader (bomber wings),

Historically, the term dates to the German air services in the World Wars and has been retained
