Geotermisti

Geotermisti is the Italian term for professionals who study and work with geothermal energy, the heat stored beneath the Earth's surface. The field encompasses scientists and engineers who apply geology, hydrology, geophysics and engineering to locate, harness and manage geothermal resources. Geotermisti work across exploration, resource assessment, drilling, plant design and operation, direct-use heating, and environmental and policy aspects of geothermal development.

Historically, geotermisti emerged as a distinct profession alongside the development of geothermal energy in the 20th century. The Italian region of Larderello hosted the first commercial geothermal power plant in 1904, signaling the shift toward geothermal electricity and direct-use heating. Since then, geotermisti have contributed to projects in Europe, the Americas, Asia and beyond, adapting techniques to local geology and resource conditions.

Geotermisti employ a range of methods: geophysical surveys (seismic, magnetotelluric), geochemical sampling of fluids, reservoir modeling, and numerical simulation of heat flow and fluid-rock interactions. They oversee drilling, well testing, reservoir engineering, and the design of power plants using dry steam, flash steam or binary cycle technologies. Environmental monitoring and mitigation of impacts such as subsidence, groundwater protection, and induced seismicity are integral.

Training backgrounds include geology, geophysics, mining or petroleum engineering, environmental science, or related disciplines. Professionalization occurs through universities, industry training, and associations. Geotermisti work for energy companies, government agencies, research institutes, and consulting firms, contributing to sustainable energy goals, climate policy, and local development while navigating regulatory and social considerations.
