Geotechnicy

Geotechnicy is an interdisciplinary field focused on the properties, behavior, and engineering applications of earth materials, including soils, rocks, and groundwater. It encompasses the study of how geologic materials respond to loads, moisture, and chemical conditions, and how these responses influence the stability and performance of structures and infrastructure. The term is sometimes used as an alternative spelling or historical variant of geotechnics or geotechnical engineering, though in some contexts it denotes a broader academic scope bridging geology and civil engineering.

Scope and core themes include site investigation and characterization, soil and rock mechanics, ground modeling, and the design of foundations, earthworks, slopes, tunnels, and embankments. Geotechnicy also covers ground improvement, groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and interactions between soils and structures (soil-structure interaction). Environmental and seismic considerations, such as liquefaction potential, slope stability under rainfall, and risk assessment for geotechnical hazards, are integral parts of the field.

Methods commonly employed are laboratory testing of soil and rock properties (testing for shear strength, consolidation, permeability, and Atterberg limits), field testing and sampling (such as standard penetration tests and cone penetration tests), borehole logging, geophysical surveys, and numerical or analytical modeling to predict behavior under various conditions. Instrumentation and monitoring during construction further support safe design and maintenance.

Geotechnicy is closely allied with geology, civil and environmental engineering, and urban planning. Its work supports the safe, economical development of infrastructure while mitigating environmental and geohazard risks.
