Georgikon

Georgikon refers to a historic Hungarian institution dedicated to higher education in agriculture, established in the late 18th century in Keszthely on the western shore of Lake Balaton. It is commonly regarded as the first institution in Hungary to specialize in agricultural studies and one of the earliest in Europe to offer higher education focused on farming and rural economy.

The Georgikon College aimed to professionalize agriculture by combining scientific instruction with practical experience. Its curriculum historically encompassed areas such as agronomy, animal husbandry, horticulture, rural economics, and farm management, often involving on-site experimentation and demonstration farms to transfer knowledge to farmers and students alike.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Georgikon underwent organizational changes within Hungary’s evolving higher education system.
