Geomeetriates

Geomeetriates are a proposed class of crystalline materials whose properties are governed primarily by the geometry of their structural motifs rather than their chemical composition alone. The name derives from geometry and the -ate suffix common in mineral and material nomenclature, signaling an extended, networked framework.

Geomeetriates are defined by networks built from building blocks such as tetrahedra, octahedra, or planar polygons. The way these units connect and arrange in three-dimensional space determines porosity, anisotropy, and electronic or optical behavior. These materials may form three-dimensional frameworks similar to zeolites or metal–organic frameworks, or result in two-dimensional sheets with interlayer linkages that can be tailored through geometry.

Synthesis and evidence: In theoretical discussions and early experimental work, geomeetriates are pursued through directed self-assembly of inorganic, organic, or hybrid precursors and through templated mineralization. Reported examples emphasize geometry-controlled pore networks and tunable band gaps or refractive indices. However, the field remains exploratory, with ongoing efforts to establish reliable synthesis routes and scalable production.

Properties and potential applications: The defining feature is tunable properties achieved by geometry rather than composition alone. This includes porosity and pore shape, mechanical stiffness, thermal expansion, and optical properties. Proposed applications span selective catalysis, photonic and sensing devices, filtration, and lightweight structural materials.
