Gensokyos

Gensokyo is a fictional, isolated land that serves as the primary setting for the Touhou Project series of Japanese bullet hell shoot 'em up games and related media. It is a realm where humans and yokai, supernatural beings from Japanese folklore, coexist, though often with a degree of separation and established rules. The exact nature of Gensokyo's boundaries and its relationship with the outside world are key elements of its lore.

The existence of Gensokyo is maintained by the Great Hakurei Barrier, a magical barrier that separates it from the Outside World. This barrier prevents humans from the Outside World from entering Gensokyo without permission and also prevents yokai from leaving. This isolation is crucial for the survival of yokai, as their existence is tied to the belief and fear of humans. Without humans, yokai would fade away.

Gensokyo is governed by a set of rules and traditions, largely enforced by the Hakurei Shrine Maiden, Reimu Hakurei, and other powerful inhabitants. Disputes between humans and yokai, or among yokai themselves, are often resolved through "incident resolution," where powerful individuals step in to solve problems that threaten the balance of Gensokyo. The landscape of Gensokyo is diverse, featuring mountains, forests, rivers, and the human village.

The inhabitants of Gensokyo are varied and include a wide array of yokai, gods, spirits, humans, and other magical beings. These characters are central to the Touhou Project's narratives and are known for their distinct personalities, abilities, and often complex backstories. The dynamic between these inhabitants and the overarching principles of Gensokyo form the basis of the series' storytelling.
