Genforening

Genforening is a Danish term that translates to "reunification" in English. It most commonly refers to the historical event of Denmark regaining sovereignty over the territory of North Schleswig (now Sønderjylland) following World War I. This event is officially commemorated in Denmark on July 10th, known as Genforeningsdag.

The reunification of North Schleswig with Denmark was the result of a plebiscite held in 1920, as stipulated by the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty aimed to resolve territorial disputes arising from the Second Schleswig War of 1864, in which Denmark ceded the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg to Prussia and Austria. The plebiscite allowed the residents of North Schleswig to determine their national affiliation.

The outcome of the plebiscite led to the majority of North Schleswig voting to become part of Denmark. This event is celebrated as a significant moment in Danish national history, symbolizing the restoration of historical territories and national unity. Genforening is a key event in Danish historical consciousness and is often taught in schools, with monuments and museums dedicated to its commemoration.
