Process and practices commonly involve defining research questions, gathering and organizing data, creating a pedigree or family tree, and verifying connections with corroborating evidence. Researchers address gaps and resolve conflicting information, often iterating between records and family recollections. Findings are typically shared in narrative form or as charted trees, with appropriate documentation.

Genetic genealogy is a supplementary approach that uses DNA testing to illuminate biological relationships and ancestral origins. It can help identify connections not evident from records, but results must be interpreted together with documentary evidence and in light of privacy considerations and test limitations.

Scope and limitations: genealogy is practiced worldwide, but record availability and quality vary by country and era. Common challenges include missing or destroyed records, name changes, spelling variation, and common surnames.
