Genchi

Genchi is a Japanese term, 現地, meaning “the actual place” or “the site,” referring to the location where events occur. The word is formed from the kanji for “present” (現) and “land/place” (地). In practice, genchi denotes the place relevant to work, operations, or study.

Genchi genbutsu (現地現物) translates as “the actual place, the actual thing” and is a central principle in the Toyota Production System and Lean manufacturing. The idea is to go to the source to observe conditions firsthand, verify facts, and understand problems before making decisions.
