Gelbkörperzyste

Gelbkörperzyste refers to a type of ovarian cyst. These cysts are a common and usually benign condition, developing after ovulation. The corpus luteum, or Gelbkörper, is a temporary structure that forms in the ovary after an egg is released. If the egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum typically breaks down. However, sometimes it can fill with fluid or blood, forming a cyst.

Gelbkörperzysten are usually asymptomatic, meaning they do not cause any noticeable symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they can include mild pelvic pain or discomfort, often on one side. In some cases, a larger cyst might cause a feeling of fullness or pressure. Rarely, a cyst can rupture, leading to sudden, sharp pain, or twist around the ovary (torsion), which is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Diagnosis is typically made through a pelvic ultrasound. In most instances, these cysts resolve on their own within one or two menstrual cycles without any intervention. Medical treatment is generally not required unless the cyst is very large, causing persistent pain, or if there is a suspicion of other ovarian pathology. If symptoms are severe or persistent, a doctor may recommend further evaluation or management.
