The category encompasses dye-doped polymer gels, organogels, and hydrogel matrices capable of supporting optical feedback and amplification. The term is not uniformly standardized, and gel-based laser devices are often described by the specific medium or cavity geometry, such as dye-doped gel lasers or gel-based planar waveguides with distributed feedback.

Operation in gel lasers is typically optically pumped, although experimental work has explored electrical pumping with conductive gel components or electrodes. In these devices, the gel serves as both the gain medium and a light-guiding medium, with the emission wavelength largely determined by the dopant (for example organic dyes or quantum dots) embedded in the gel matrix. The gel’s optical properties, chemical compatibility, and stability influence performance, including the lasing threshold, emission wavelength, and durability.

Applications cited in the literature range from fundamental studies of light-m gain in soft matter to potential uses in bioimaging, sensing, and integrated photonic devices. Challenges include photobleaching, thermal sensitivity, moisture dependence, and mechanical fragility, which limit long-term reliability and scalability. The field remains a niche area within photonics, with ongoing research exploring broader practical implementations.
