Geheimer

Geheimer is a historical German title element used to denote a privy or confidential adviser within the civil service and judiciary of German-speaking states. In practice, the term appeared in ranks such as Geheimer Rat (Privy Counselor) and Geheimer Hofrat (Privy Court Counselor), among others. Holders were senior officials—often lawyers or jurists—who advised rulers or ministers on policy, legal matters, and administration. Their duties could include preparing opinions, drafting decrees, and representing the state in diplomatic, financial, or judicial affairs. The precise status and responsibilities varied by era and realm, including the Holy Roman Empire, the Austrian Empire, and various German states.

Etymology and usage: Geheim means secret in modern German, but in these titles geheimer functions as an adjective meaning privy or confidential rather than simply secret. The offices were typically conferred by the sovereign and could be for life or at the ruler’s pleasure.
