Gebedshallen

Gebedshallen are rooms or halls designated for religious worship and private or communal prayer. The term is used in Dutch-speaking regions to describe prayer spaces within mosques, churches, synagogues, temples, and community centers, as well as in multi-purpose religious facilities. They are designed to accommodate liturgical practices, meditative reflection, and small ceremonies.

Design and features vary by tradition. In mosques, the gebedshal typically faces the qibla, contains a mihrab, a raised platform or minbar, and a washable carpeted floor for prostration; in churches, the space may be laid out as a nave with pews and an altar; in synagogues, the aron kodesh and bimah mark sacred areas; in temples, main halls with altars or icons. Many gebedshallen include ablution facilities nearby, dress codes signage, and gender-separated sections in some communities. The use of the hall can be daily, weekly, or for special occasions such as prayer services, holy days, or study circles. In modern contexts, gebedshallen can also serve as community rooms outside of liturgical times.

Architectural and cultural considerations include acoustics, access, and the balance between liturgical propriety and community needs. The term emphasizes the function of space as a place of worship rather than a secular room.
