In practice, a gatefoldkannet consists of a rigid or semi-rigid outer jacket that houses a multi-panel gatefold interior. The outer shell may feature a window, embossing, or printed artwork and is hinged or attached to the spine; when opened, the inner gatefold unfolds to reveal two or more panels.

Usage of the format is primarily found in limited-edition music releases, artist books, and premium catalogs. It is valued for combining physical protection with expansive imagery, enabling large-format artwork to be presented in a compact closed form and providing a tactile unboxing experience that can enhance collectibility.
