Gassens

Gassens is a small town and civil parish in the Nordmark region of Veridia. It sits on the northern shore of Lake Verda, about 50 kilometers northeast of the regional capital Almera. The municipality covers about 42 square kilometers and includes farmland, woodland, and wetlands. The population was roughly 3,400 in 2022, with a modest aging trend.

Gassens is first mentioned in historical records from 1132. It traditionally depended on agriculture and milling, and its development accelerated with the arrival of the railway in the late 19th century. Through the 20th century it remained a rural community, gradually adopting modern infrastructure while preserving its local character.

Today the economy combines dairy farming, light manufacturing, and services, with tourism tied to the lake and surrounding nature. Gassens is connected by regional roads and has a station on the Nordmark intercity line; the nearest airport is in Almera, about 60 kilometers away.

Notable sites include St. Nikolaus Church, a 13th-century structure, and the Gassens Windmill. The Lake Verda promenade provides recreational space for residents and visitors. An annual Gassens Day festival in late summer features local food, crafts, and music, contributing to the town’s cultural life.

Gassens is governed by a municipal council and a mayor, and forms part of the Nordmark regional municipality. It operates a primary school and kindergarten, with secondary education available in nearby towns.
