Gasestypically refers to the common characteristics and behaviors observed in gaseous substances. Gases are a state of matter distinct from solids and liquids, primarily defined by their ability to expand indefinitely to fill any container they occupy. This lack of a fixed shape or volume is a fundamental property of gases.

Key aspects of gasestypically include their compressibility. Unlike solids and liquids, gases can be squeezed into smaller volumes under pressure due to the relatively large distances between their constituent particles. This property is essential in many industrial and technological applications. Another typical characteristic is their low density. The particles in a gas are spread far apart, leading to a much lower mass per unit volume compared to solids and liquids.

Gases also exhibit diffusion and effusion. Diffusion is the process by which gas particles spread out from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, eventually mixing with other gases. Effusion is the movement of gas particles through a small opening. The kinetic theory of gases explains these behaviors by postulating that gas particles are in constant, random motion and possess kinetic energy. The average kinetic energy of gas particles is directly proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas. Therefore, increasing temperature typically leads to increased particle speed and greater pressure if the volume is held constant. Conversely, decreasing temperature generally results in slower particle motion and reduced pressure.
