Gasbarriere

Gasbarriere, literally a gas barrier, is a term used to describe a material, layer, or system designed to prevent or greatly reduce the diffusion of gases through a barrier. It is applied in various fields to protect contents, maintain product quality, or prevent the ingress or escape of gases in built environments and industrial settings. The concept encompasses both impermeable films and engineered multilayer systems that slow or stop gas transmission.

In packaging and storage, gasbarriere refers to films and coatings with high resistance to gas permeation, particularly oxygen and carbon dioxide. These barrier properties help extend shelf life and preserve aromas, colors, and textures. Common barrier materials include EVOH, PVDC, polyamides, and metalized films, often used in laminates or coatings with aluminum foil. Performance is quantified by permeability and transmission rates, such as the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) or carbon dioxide transmission rate, typically reported under specified temperature and humidity conditions.

In construction and building protection, gasbarriere denotes membranes and layers that block soil gases such as radon or methane from entering living spaces. These barriers are installed under slabs or behind foundations and are designed to be continuous with joints and penetrations properly sealed. Materials may include polyethylene sheets, bituminous membranes, or composite laminates, sometimes combined with venting or detection systems.

Gasbarriere also finds use in industrial and laboratory contexts, where hermetic seals, gloveboxes, and gas-tight enclosures require effective containment to prevent gas leakage or contamination.
