Garvingsprosessen, or the tanning process, is a method used to treat animal hides and skins to prevent decay and make them durable and flexible. This ancient technique transforms raw hides, which are prone to rotting, into leather, a versatile material used in numerous applications. The core of the process involves introducing tanning agents into the hide's collagen structure.

Historically, various natural materials were employed as tanning agents. Vegetable tanning, one of the oldest methods, utilizes tannins extracted from plant matter such as bark, leaves, and roots. This process typically involves soaking the hides in a series of increasingly concentrated tannin solutions over an extended period. The resulting leather is often firm, possesses a characteristic earthy scent, and is suitable for items like belts, shoe soles, and bags.

Another significant method is chrome tanning, a more modern industrial approach that uses chromium salts. This process is considerably faster than vegetable tanning and produces a softer, more pliable, and water-resistant leather. Chrome-tanned leather is widely used for garments, upholstery, and footwear.
