Garnarts

Garnarts is a contemporary art practice and design brand that emerged in the early 2010s. It encompasses installation art, sculpture, and interactive media, with an emphasis on material exploration and the phenomenology of light and space.

The movement originated in Milan in 2011 when artists Sofia Garn and Mateo Ríos formed Garnarts Studio to explore modular systems that could be reconfigured across venues. The name combines the founders' surnames and the word arts, signaling a collaborative approach to making and display.

Key characteristics include collaborative, modular installations that use sustainable materials such as recycled plastics, bamboo, plant-based resins, and mineral pigments. Works often incorporate programmable LEDs and sound elements, while generative software guides the arrangement of forms to allow each installation to be subtly unique.

Notable works include Aurora Grid (2014), a wall-based constellation of translucent panels that shift with ambient light; Memory Lattice (2017), an expandable floor piece that records visitor movement through light trails; and Quiet Machine (2020), a kinetic sculpture responding to sound.
