Galvanizing, also known as galvanization, is a process used to protect iron and steel from corrosion by coating them with a layer of zinc. This method has been widely used since the 18th century and is named after Luigi Galvani, an Italian physicist who first discovered the phenomenon of galvanic action. The galvanizing process involves immersing the metal in a bath of molten zinc or applying a zinc coating through other methods such as electroplating or hot-dip galvanizing.

The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial anode, meaning it corrodes instead of the underlying iron or steel. This is due to the galvanic action, where the zinc, being more electropositive, corrodes preferentially. The resulting zinc oxide and zinc carbonate layers provide excellent protection against atmospheric corrosion. Galvanizing is particularly effective in environments with high humidity, salt spray, or acidic conditions.

There are several methods of galvanizing, including hot-dip galvanizing, electrogalvanizing, and mechanical galvanizing. Hot-dip galvanizing is the most common method, where the metal is submerged in a bath of molten zinc at temperatures above 450°C. This process creates a uniform and durable zinc coating that adheres tightly to the base metal.

Galvanizing is widely used in construction, automotive, and industrial applications. It is particularly valuable in structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as bridges, buildings, and pipelines. The process not only extends the lifespan of the metal but also reduces maintenance costs and improves the overall durability of the structures.
