Its name derives from the presence of mannose-containing polysaccharides in its cell walls, a characteristic shared with other fungal genera.

Members of the genus are primarily known for their association with root and stem diseases in crops such as alfalfa, clover, and other legumes. The most studied species, *Galactomannomyces cajani*, was originally classified as a pathogen causing root rot in pigeon pea (*Cajanus cajan*).
