Gaasiandurid

Gaasiandurid, also known as gas lanterns, are lighting devices that produce light by burning a fuel gas. Typically, the fuel gas is propane or butane, stored in a portable cylinder. The gas is released through a valve and mixed with air before combustion. The flame produced heats a mantle, a mesh material made of thorium and other rare earth oxides, which then glows brightly. This incandescent glow provides a warm, steady light, making gaasiandurid popular for camping, outdoor events, and in areas where electricity is unavailable.

The design of a gaasiandurid usually includes a fuel source, a regulator to control gas flow, a burner assembly, and a protective glass or metal casing. Some models are handheld, while others are designed to be hung or placed on a stable surface. The brightness of the light can often be adjusted by modifying the gas flow. Maintenance typically involves cleaning the mantle and ensuring the gas connection is secure. While effective, gaasiandurid produce heat and require adequate ventilation due to the combustion process. They have largely been superseded by electric lighting in many applications but remain a favored choice for their portability and distinct ambiance.
