GEMCO

GEMCO, or Groote Eylandt Mining Company, is a manganese ore mine located on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Territory, Australia. It is among the world's largest manganese mining operations and represents a significant component of the Australian manganese industry.

The mine operates as a joint venture between South32 and Anglo American plc. Mining activity began in the 1960s following the discovery of substantial manganese reserves on the island, and the operation has since expanded to support commercial production.

GEMCO uses open-pit mining methods and ore processing facilities to extract and concentrate manganese ore for export. Ore and concentrate are shipped for transformation into steelmaking products, with the operation serving as a major employer for Groote Eylandt and a significant contributor to regional and national economies.

GEMCO runs environmental management programs, land rehabilitation, water and tailings management, and community development initiatives in cooperation with island communities. The operation has interacted with Indigenous land rights and community development, including impact-benefit agreements and ongoing engagement with traditional owners.
