Försöksperiod

Försöksperiod, often translated as probation period or trial period, is a term used in employment contexts in Sweden. It refers to a specific duration at the beginning of an employment relationship during which either the employer or the employee can terminate the employment with a shorter notice period than usual, or in some cases, without notice. This period serves as a mutual opportunity for both parties to assess their suitability for the role and the working environment.

The standard duration for a försökperiod is typically six months, though this can be extended by collective agreements. During this time, the notice period for the employer is generally two weeks, and for the employee, it is also two weeks. After the försökperiod has concluded, the regular employment terms, including longer notice periods and stronger protection against dismissal, come into effect.

The purpose of a försökperiod is to facilitate a smooth integration into a new job. For the employer, it allows them to evaluate an employee's performance, skills, and fit within the company culture. For the employee, it provides a chance to experience the job and the workplace before making a long-term commitment. If either party finds the arrangement unsatisfactory, the försökperiod offers a straightforward way to end the employment without the complexities associated with dismissal under regular employment law.
