Förborrande
Förborrande is a Swedish term that translates to pre-drilling or pilot drilling in English. It refers to the practice of creating a small hole before driving a screw or nail into a material. This technique is commonly employed in woodworking, construction, and DIY projects. The primary purpose of förborrande is to prevent the material from splitting, especially in brittle materials like hardwoods or when working near the edge of a piece. It also makes driving the fastener easier, reducing the effort required and the risk of the screw or nail bending. The diameter of the pre-drilled hole is typically smaller than the core diameter of the fastener, ensuring that the threads of a screw can still grip the material effectively. For nails, the hole is usually slightly smaller than the nail's diameter to provide resistance and prevent it from backing out easily. The depth of the pre-drilled hole should generally match the length of the fastener being used. Choosing the correct drill bit size is crucial for successful förborrande. Incorrect sizing can either negate the benefits or make the fastener difficult to install.
