Fængslet

Fængslet is the Danish word for a prison or jail, used to describe places where people are held as a result of legal detention. In addition to its generic meaning, the term is also used as a proper name for several historic prison buildings in Denmark. These structures are often preserved or repurposed after closure, reflecting Denmark’s approach to adaptive reuse of penal architecture.

The most well-known example is the Fængslet in Horsens, a former state prison that has been converted into a cultural venue. Today, it functions as a site for concerts, exhibitions, and other events, and serves as a landmark in the city. The building’s design and layout, typical of 19th-century penal architecture, remain a notable aspect of its historical character, even as the facility serves a very different function.

Beyond Horsens, other former Danish prisons have carried the name or are locally referred to as Fængslet. In such cases, the term emphasizes the building’s original purpose while its current use centers on culture, education, or tourism. The continued presence of these sites highlights trends in heritage preservation and adaptive reuse, whereby former detention facilities are integrated into contemporary urban life rather than demolished.
