Färgmättnad

Färgmättnad, often referred to as saturation, is a fundamental attribute of color. It describes the intensity or purity of a color. A highly saturated color is vivid and appears to have little to no gray mixed in. Conversely, a desaturated color appears duller, grayer, or muted, suggesting that it contains a significant amount of white, black, or gray.

In color models such as HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) or HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value), saturation is represented as a numerical value, typically ranging from 0% to 100%. A saturation of 0% usually indicates a completely gray or achromatic color, meaning it has no hue. As the saturation value increases towards 100%, the color becomes more pure and vibrant.

The perception of saturation can be influenced by various factors, including lighting conditions, surrounding colors, and individual differences in color vision. In digital imaging and graphic design, adjusting saturation is a common technique used to enhance or alter the visual impact of images. Increasing saturation can make colors pop, while decreasing it can create a softer or more vintage aesthetic. It is distinct from hue, which defines the color itself (e.g., red, blue, green), and lightness or brightness, which determines how light or dark a color appears.
