Färdledsår

Färdledsår, also known as traveler's itch or sand flea dermatitis, is an inflammatory skin reaction caused by the bite of certain species of sandflies, most commonly *Culicoides* midges. These tiny insects are prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in coastal areas and near bodies of water. The bites typically occur on exposed skin, especially the ankles, legs, and arms.

The reaction to färdledsår can vary greatly among individuals. Some people experience mild itching and redness, while others develop more severe symptoms. Common signs include intensely itchy papules, vesicles, or even bullae. The itching is often intense and can be persistent, leading to scratching, which can then cause secondary bacterial infections. The lesions may appear in clusters and can persist for days or even weeks.

Diagnosis is usually based on the characteristic appearance of the rash and the individual's travel history to areas where sandflies are endemic. There is no specific cure for färdledsår, and treatment focuses on symptomatic relief. This includes using over-the-counter or prescription antihistamines to reduce itching and inflammation, and topical corticosteroids for more severe reactions. Avoiding scratching is crucial to prevent secondary infections, and antiseptic creams or lotions may be recommended. Prevention involves using insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak sandfly biting times, typically dawn and dusk.
