Fyrhjulsdrivet, commonly known as four-wheel drive (4WD) or four-wheel drive (4x4), refers to a system that provides power to all four wheels of a vehicle simultaneously. This configuration enhances traction, stability, and control, particularly in challenging off-road conditions, such as mud, snow, sand, or steep terrain. Unlike two-wheel drive systems, which engage only the rear or front wheels, 4WD distributes engine power evenly across all four wheels, improving grip and reducing the risk of wheel slippage.

The concept of fyrhjulsdrivet originated in the early 20th century, with early applications in military and agricultural vehicles. Modern passenger cars, SUVs, and trucks often feature 4WD systems, which can be permanent (full-time) or selectable (part-time). Full-time 4WD systems continuously engage all wheels, offering improved handling and stability, while part-time systems allow drivers to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive as needed. Some advanced systems use electronic controls to adjust torque distribution dynamically, optimizing performance based on road conditions.

Fyrhjulsdrivet is particularly valuable in regions with harsh climates or rugged landscapes, where conventional vehicles may struggle. However, it requires careful operation to avoid damaging the drivetrain, as improper use—such as engaging 4WD on dry pavement—can lead to accelerated wear. Proper maintenance, including regular inspections of the transfer case, differentials, and drivetrain components, is essential for ensuring reliable performance. While 4WD enhances off-road capability, it does not eliminate the need for cautious driving and appropriate vehicle preparation for challenging environments.
