Futterlagern

Futterlagern refers to facilities and practices used to store animal feed (Futter) in agriculture. The term covers on-farm storage as well as commercial stockpiles for hay, silage, grains, and prepared mixed feeds. The main purpose is to preserve nutritional value, prevent spoilage, and ensure a reliable supply for livestock, especially through seasonal fluctuations and market changes.

Storage methods vary with the type of feed. Hay is typically kept in dry, well-ventilated barns or stacked in covered bays to minimize moisture uptake. Silage is stored in sealed silos, clamps, or wrap precut bales to promote fermentation and prevent spoilage. Grains and mixed feeds are kept in grain bins, bulk storage, or bagged form, often with ventilation, pest protection, and access control. Adequate moisture control, temperature management, and protection from pests are essential to maintain quality.

Management involves inventory control, regular inspections, and rotation schedules (often first in, first out). Quality checks include moisture measurement, odor and color assessment, and sampling for contaminants or mycotoxins. Sanitation, rodent and pest management, and proper handling procedures reduce spoilage and contamination. Fire and dust hazards require appropriate fire safety measures and dust control.

Futterlagern play a key role in livestock nutrition and farm economics, linking harvest outcomes to feeding plans. They require investment in infrastructure and ongoing maintenance to minimize losses from spoilage, pests, or environmental exposure, while complying with relevant feed safety and environmental regulations.
