The concept draws on the French words fusée, meaning rocket or fuse, and chaîne, meaning chain, to evoke both sudden propulsion and enduring connection. There is no single formal definition, but it is commonly used as a heuristic to analyze how an initial event or action can trigger a sequence of consequential steps.

Origin and scope are informal and contextual, often appearing in design writings, game studies, and kinetic art discussions. The term is typically employed to distinguish a burst-like onset from a continuous, interconnected development, and to encourage explicit consideration of timing, energy transfer, and dependency between stages.

Principles and applications. In practice, the fusée phase denotes a brief, high-intensity actuation that starts a process or narrative movement. The chain phase comprises a series of dependent, linked steps that sustain momentum, shape outcomes, and enforce constraints based on prior steps. This framework is used in kinetic sculpture to choreograph bursts of motion followed by coordinated gear or linkage sequences, in interactive installations to manage user-triggered events and subsequent system behavior, and in storytelling and game design to model pacing, escalation, and consequence.

Criticism and limitations. As a metaphor, fuséeandchain can be over-applied or misinterpreted as a literal physical specification.
