Funktionsräume (functional spaces) is a term used in architecture, planning, and building management to describe rooms that are designated for a specific activity or function within a building. The concept focuses on task-oriented design, where the size, equipment, ventilation, lighting, acoustics, and accessibility of a space are defined by its intended use rather than by general living or circulation needs.

Typical examples include kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, offices, storage rooms, laboratories, and technical rooms. In larger or public buildings, functional spaces also encompass conference rooms, auditoria, foyers, and other areas with defined performance criteria. In residential architecture the layout of functional spaces is often guided by the Raumprogramm, the space program that specifies required rooms and their relationships to each other and to circulation areas.

Design considerations for Funktionsräume start with the function and user requirements, followed by the arrangement of adjacent spaces, service routes, and flexibility. Important criteria include fire safety, accessibility (barrierefreiheit), daylight and artificial lighting, acoustics, ventilation, and energy efficiency.
