Funchal

Funchal is the capital city of the Madeira Autonomous Region of Portugal and the main urban center on the island of Madeira. It sits on the south coast and anchors the regional government and economy. The city has a long history rooted in the early Portuguese exploration of the Atlantic. Madeira’s discovery in the early 15th century led to rapid development around the harbor, with trading and ship provisioning; the city grew as a hub for Madeira wine and agricultural exports. Notable historical landmarks include the Sé Cathedral, built in the 15th century, and Fort São Tiago at the harbor.

Geography and climate: Funchal experiences a mild subtropical climate, with warm summers and mild winters. Transportation: Funchal is served by Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, located near Santa Cruz and connected to the city by road, and by Funchal Port, which receives cruise ships and ferries.
