Fullgilt

Fullgilt is a term used in the fields of art conservation and decorative arts to describe a surface that is fully covered with gold leaf or gold plating, producing a continuous gold appearance without exposed substrate.

The word derives from "full" and "gilt"—the latter meaning gilded—reflecting a deliberate aim of complete gilding rather than partial accents.

Common techniques include water gilding, which uses a water-based adhesive and bole undercoat to produce a bright, warm gold, and oil gilding, which employs drying oils as the adhesive. After leaf is applied, surfaces may be burnished and sealed with varnish or lacquer to protect the finish.

Fullgilt is used on picture frames, furniture, architectural surfaces such as moldings and ceiling decorations, and religious or ceremonial objects.

Process steps include surface preparation, sizing, application of gold leaf, stabilization, and finishing. Because gold leaf is delicate, careful handling and proper climate control are important.

In conservation practice, fullgilt requires ongoing maintenance; cleaning favors soft brushes and gentle methods, and repairs may involve re-leafing or patching minimal areas.
