Fuelkonstruktion refers to the engineering discipline that deals with the design, formulation, and testing of fuels intended for use in energy conversion systems, such as internal combustion engines and turbines. It covers the selection of chemical composition, additives, and production processes to achieve targeted performance, efficiency, safety, and environmental properties.

Key design objectives include maximizing usable energy per unit volume or mass, controlling combustion characteristics (such as octane rating for spark-ignition engines or cetane rating for compression-ignition engines), and ensuring appropriate volatility, viscosity, lubricity, and cold-start behavior. The fuel must minimize engine deposits, corrosion, and wear, while compatible with seals, pumps, and fuel lines.

Formulation and production involve refining crude feedstocks, blending fuels with additives (detergency agents, antioxidants, metal deactivators, seal swell partners), and meeting defined specifications for sulfur content, sulfur compounds, and aromatics. Quality control and compliance are enforced by national and international standards, such as octane or cetane numbers and energy content measurements.

Fuelkonstruktion also addresses safety and infrastructure considerations, including storage stability, vapor pressure, flammability, and compatibility with distribution networks and storage tanks. Regulations aim to reduce emissions and improve sustainability, often driving the adoption of low-sulfur fuels and renewable blends.

Emerging trends include renewable and synthetic fuels, biofuels (ethanol, biodiesel), and power-to-liquid fuels, as well as additives and processing that enable higher efficiency and lower lifecycle emissions. The field integrates chemistry, materials science, regulatory policy, and engine technology, and interacts with broader shifts toward decarbonization and alternative propulsion.

Testing and characterization cover properties such as energy density, octane/cetane, Reid vapor pressure, pour point, lubricity, and stability, using standardized methods to ensure performance across climates and engines.
