The EU toy directive, for instance, prohibits the use of a list of 12 phthalates in items sold to children. These rules have prompted manufacturers to develop phthalate‑free alternatives, which are sometimes marketed under descriptors such as “phthalate‑free” or “ftalaattivapaat.”

The term “ftalaattivapaat” is commonly employed by consumer advocacy groups, health institutions, and manufacturers to assure end users that products are free from these chemicals. Many phthalate‑free products employ alternative plasticizers, such as citrate esters or acetylated phthalates, or use materials that do not require plasticizers at all such as rubber or silicone. In cosmetics, phthalates are often replaced by esters of fatty acids or by natural oils that provide similar flexibility.

Public awareness of ftalaattivapaat has increased through labeling initiatives and certification schemes such as the EU’s REACH compliance labels. Research continues on the long‐term health effects of low‑level phthalate exposure, and regulatory agencies periodically review acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) and permissible concentrations. As a result, the market for ftalaattivapaat products has expanded, with many toy manufacturers, toy retailers and food‑contact material suppliers adopting phthalate‑free lines to meet customer demand and regulatory compliance.
