Fruitarians

Fruitarians are people who follow a dietary pattern that places fruit at or near the center of their intake. The term covers a range of practices. In its strictest form, a fruitarian diet consists primarily of ripe fruit, with occasional additions such as nuts, seeds, and dried fruits. Some adherents also eat vegetables, grains, and legumes, while others restrict themselves to fruits that can be harvested without killing the plant or that have fallen naturally.

Motivations vary; ethical concerns about harming animals or plants, environmental considerations, health beliefs, or spiritual or cultural reasons.

A fruitarian diet can make it difficult to obtain sufficient protein, calories, and nutrients such as iron, zinc, calcium, iodine, and vitamin B12. Omega-3 fatty acids may be limited. Vitamin B12 supplementation is commonly recommended for long-term vegan or fruitarian diets. High fruit intake can lead to excess sugar consumption and dental erosion; some people experience dizziness, fatigue, or poor energy if calories are insufficient. Regular medical monitoring and a varied diet are advised.

Because definitions vary, fruitarianism is considered fringe by many nutrition scientists. There is limited research on long-term health outcomes. It is generally advised to approach with caution and to consult professionals if considering this diet.
