Fruchtwasserbeutel is a term used in some German-speaking regions to refer to the amniotic sac, also known as the bag of waters. The amniotic sac is a thin membrane that surrounds the fetus during pregnancy. It is filled with amniotic fluid, which cushions and protects the baby from physical trauma. The amniotic fluid also helps to maintain a stable temperature for the fetus and allows for freedom of movement, which is crucial for proper development.

The amniotic sac plays a vital role throughout pregnancy. In the early stages, it helps to implant the fertilized egg and provides nourishment. As the pregnancy progresses, the amniotic fluid volume increases, and its composition changes. The fetus swallows the amniotic fluid, which aids in the development of its digestive system, and also excretes waste into it, which is then filtered by the placenta.

The rupture of the amniotic sac, commonly known as "water breaking," signifies the onset of labor. This can happen spontaneously or may need to be induced by medical professionals. The timing and nature of this rupture are important indicators for healthcare providers to monitor the progress of labor and the well-being of both the mother and the baby. A premature rupture of membranes, occurring before the onset of labor, can increase the risk of infection.
