Frontozygomatic

Frontozygomatic refers to the frontozygomatic suture, the articulation between the frontal bone and the zygomatic bone in the skull. It lies at the superolateral border of the orbit, where the frontal bone's lateral orbital surface meets the zygomatic bone's frontal process, contributing to the lateral wall of the orbit and the superior orbital rim.

Anatomy and location: The frontozygomatic suture marks the junction between the frontal bone and the zygomatic bone. It forms part of the lateral orbital wall and the upper outer portion of the orbital rim, aligning with nearby structures such as the zygomatic arch and the orbital roof. The suture is often studied in imaging to assess the integrity of the orbital framework.

Development and variation: Like other cranial sutures, the frontozygomatic suture is a fibrous joint in early life and undergoes gradual maturation with age. The degree of ossification and precise morphology of the suture can vary among individuals, and in some people the suture may become partially fused earlier or later in life.

Clinical relevance: The frontozygomatic region is clinically important in facial trauma. Fractures in this area are commonly encountered as part of more extensive zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures and can affect the orbital contents, facial contour, and ocular function. Radiologic assessment of the frontozygomatic suture helps determine fracture displacement and stability, guiding surgical planning and reconstruction. The region serves as a landmark for approaches to the lateral orbit and zygomaticomaxillary reconstruction.
