FourinHand

FourinHand, commonly written four-in-hand, is a necktie knot that ranks among the simplest and most frequently used knots for tying a tie. It produces a slim, slightly asymmetrical knot that is easy to tie and fast to adjust, making it a popular choice for daily wear and formal occasions alike.

The name derives from the four-in-hand carriage method used by coachmen to control four horses with a single hand, a reference that later gave its name to the knot because the way the tie loops recalls the single-hand technique. The knot dates from the 19th century and became widely adopted in Western menswear in the 20th century.

Construction: To tie it, drape the tie around the neck with the wide end on the wearer's right side and the narrow end on the left. Cross the wide end over the narrow end, then wrap it behind the knot and bring it up through the neck loop from underneath. Finally, pass the wide end down through the front loop and snug the knot. The result is a compact, easily adjustable knot that works well with most shirt collars and fabrics.

Variations: The FourinHand can appear slightly off-center or asymmetrical, a characteristic some wearers prefer for a casual look. It remains a default choice for many novices due to its straightforward technique and reliable finish.
