Fotografiewereld

Fotografiewereld is the Dutch term for the world of photography. It refers to the broad system of practices, technologies, institutions, and communities involved in capturing, processing, distributing, and interpreting images made with cameras or similar devices. The term encompasses artistic creation, documentary work, scientific imaging, commercial photography, education, and media. It includes photographers, studios and agencies, camera and lens manufacturers, software developers, publishers, galleries, and archives.

Historically, the fotografiewereld emerged in the 19th century with the invention of photography, the daguerreotype, and later processes, expanding as cameras became affordable and portable. The 20th century brought professional photojournalism, color photography, and standardized workflows. The digital era, from the late 20th century onward, transformed the field through digital sensors, image editing software, and online distribution. In the 21st century, smartphones further democratized image making and sharing, while stock photography, social media, and AI-generated imagery reshaped workflows and aesthetics.

Contemporary issues include copyright and image rights, consent in representing people, metadata management, and the preservation of archives. The field is multidisciplinary, overlapping with art, science, journalism, design, and technology, and continues to evolve with new tools, platforms, and practices.
