Fosforhappes

Fosforhappes, also known as phosphoric acid or orthophosphoric acid, is a chemical compound with the molecular formula H₃PO₄. It is a mineral acid composed of phosphorus, hydrogen, and oxygen. In its pure form, it is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid at room temperature. It is a weak acid, meaning it does not fully dissociate in water.

Phosphoric acid is widely used in various industries. One of its major applications is in the production of phosphate fertilizers, which are essential for agricultural productivity. It is also utilized as a food additive, commonly designated by the E number E338. In this capacity, it serves as an acidulant, a flavoring agent, and a preservative in many food and beverage products, particularly colas.

Beyond these large-scale uses, phosphoric acid finds application in rust removal, dental and orthodontic treatments, and as an electrolyte in some batteries. It is also used in chemical synthesis and as a catalyst. While generally considered safe in diluted forms and in food products, concentrated phosphoric acid can be corrosive and can cause severe burns upon contact with skin and eyes. Its production typically involves reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid.
